Esseks, one of the leaders of the freeform bass movement, has just released his latest project, Broken Thought. The six-track EP is Esseks in peak form, and justifies once again that those making unique bass music are among the foremost risk-takers in electronic music. The bass music scene has grown substantially in the last few years, and Esseks is proving to be a major player in helping bass music get the recognition it deserves.
Broken Thought is Esseks’ second EP of the year following A Hole in the Fourth Wall, and caps off a very successful year for the producer and visual artist. In addition to both EPs, Esseks released his highly anticipated collaboration, “Professor Genius” with Space Jesus—a track that Space Jesus has been opening many of his sets with throughout the year.
Born Sam Eckstein, the producer is also an incredibly talented visual artist. Eckstein showcases his instantly recognizable drawings on his album art. Despite still living in Brooklyn, it had been three years since Esseks had played a show in his home borough. That all changed last week, when he returned to Brooklyn on Dec. 1 with a custom stage made specifically for the Broken Thought release, and visuals created entirely using his artwork. He played into the early morning, and was embraced mightily by his hometown crowd.
